DC Horsens nominated
for automation prize

Danish Crown i Horsens

Randers, 21 August 2009

Even though it is now four years since Danish Crown opened the world’s most modern slaughterhouse in Horsens, the high-tech facility continues to impress.

In the latest issue of the Danish technical journal ‘Teknisk Nyt’, focus is again on the technological solutions at the slaughterhouse.

The Danish Meat Research Institute has nominated the slaughterhouse for the automation prize ‘Automatiseringsprisen 2009’ and is also publishing a long article about the facilities.
- Danish state-of-the-art slaughterhouse handles 86,000 pigs a week. The slaughterhouse features every conceivable type of automation and robot technology, and new solutions are constantly being developed and tested. The aim is both to improve the working environment and also to boost productivity per employees, while at the same time increasing focus on traceability, animal welfare and hygienic design, writes Teknisk Nyt about DC in Horsens.

- We are delighted with the nomination. We see it as an acknowledgement of all the hard work devoted by both our employees and suppliers to building a large-scale and modern slaughterhouse from scratch using state-of-the-art technology designed specifically for this sector, says Søren Eriksen, Technical Director of Danish Crown and responsible for what has been the largest building project in the history of Danish slaughterhouses so far.

- It also shows the world that a lot of R&D within automation and robot technology is being carried out in a sector which is not usually considered very high-tech, but where Danish know-how is actually world-class, says Søren Eriksen.

Vidste du ...
… that Danish veterinary inspections and controls are amongst the strictest in the world.

Regulatory veterinary inspections of Danish Crown sites are carried out independently of Danish Crown. However, Danish Crown supplements these with its own internal inspections in accordance with international HACCP Principles.

All slaughterhouse employees are required to complete a hygiene course, and everyone understands what the individual worker means for the quality of finished product.
