Question:
When did Danish Crown start?

Answer:
Danish Crown is the result of a number of mergers of slaughtering businesses over many years. There is therefore no straightforward answer to the question of who started Danish Crown and when.
The first Danish cooperative slaughterhouse was set up in Horsens in 1887. This slaughterhouse is now part of Danish Crown.
During the next 40-50 years, a large number of cooperative pig slaughterhouses were established in Denmark.
In 1960 the cooperative slaughterhouses started to merge so as to stand stronger within, for example, sales, marketing and product development.

1998 saw the merger of Danish Crown and Vestjyske Slagterier.
The most recent merger was between Danish Crown and Steff-Houlberg, and a large number of the original cooperative pig slaughterhouses are now part of Danish Crown.
